Pauline, Polly, Sheri and Morgan...Four generations of Gospel singers in the same family, all currently traveling. What a heritage for our industry to be proud of!
Like mother Pauline Holloway (Mom) Lewis of the famed Bluegrass Lewis Family, like daughter Polly. Like Polly Lewis Copsey of the same Lewis Family fame, like daughter Sheri. Like Mother Sheri Easter of renowned Jeff & Sheri Easter, like daughter Morgan, one of Gospel music's youngest performing artists.
Mom Lewis started this generation of mothers and daughters when she married Pop Lewis in Lincoln County, GA, back in 1925 at only 15 years of age. They had eight children. Mom played the guitar like Mother Maybelle Carter, using no pick, just fingers. Her children report that she was a mother who knelt by her bed and prayed each night, never selfish, always a neat, clean, shy and soft-spoken person. Cleanliness and Godliness was always her rule, and she always wanted everything to be 'just right' in every way. Her daughter, Polly, says, "Once she fell in the bus and cut the back of her head really bad. She had Miggie, Janis and me to change all of her clothes before she went to the hospital, and the shoes had to match, too!"
And, you might have guessed it - Mom Lewis was an excellent cook and seamstress. She made hundreds of clothes for the Lewis girls to wear on stage, including much of the wardrobe for their long-running TV show. The whole family agrees that Mom's cooking was the best, always perfectly prepared in every way - taste and appearance. It left such an impression on them all that the girls have tried to cook like her.
But her talents don't stop there. This resourceful lady also helped take care of the Lewis Family music business by handling office chores such as paying bills, ordering products, booking dates, etc. She always 'manned' the product table while on the road, even through knee and hip replacements. Her activities were curtailed somewhat in 1992 however when she had serious surgery to remove a large meningioma brain tumor. Again in 1993 she had gamma knife radiation that halted another tumor, and the family gives God the glory. Polly says, "We thank everyone for their prayers. It's because of this she's here today and still full-time with us. Mom will be 90 in June, Pop 95 in September, and their 75th anniversary will be on October 25th if it's the Lord's will."
Like mother like daughter...When she was a child, Polly Lewis Copsey's grandfather called her 'Sunshine.' She used to get spankings for giggling so much because she was always so 'perky.' Her two children, daughter Sheri and son Scott say that she 'never has a bad day.' As toddlers they became used to their mother singing and traveling, and fell right into the schedule. When Polly was home, she took them to Mom Lewis' house to take care of the Lewis Family mail. Polly shares, "The day President Kennedy was killed, I had Sheri there at Mom's in her portable bassinet."
Sometimes Polly feels like she missed out on a lot of events with her children when they stayed home with their father, but daughter Sheri says, "We never felt neglected in any way. She was at home every Monday through Thursday, so it felt like she was an 'at-home' mom. She made all our school activities, baked cookies for meetings, had time for my friends to come over, etc., so she wasn't 'away,' she was just special!" Even with her full schedule, Polly still cooked a full meal every night - 'meat & three' - "I don't know how she did it," confesses Sheri. She continues, "My mother is everything I always wanted to be - beautiful, talented, good business-woman, kind, thoughtful, compassionate, terrific mom, Godly, moral, and every other adjective I can think of." Sheri admits she's often said about her mom, "She's an angel without wings."
Like mother, like daughter...When Sheri was 6 years old her Sunday School teacher took her around to the other classes where she recited all the books of the Bible. Her mother says, "I believe at this time a seed was being sown for the life she's living now." Sheri sang with a church group for several years, and won first place in a talent competition for Miss Teen Georgia Beauty Contest. Naturally she won by singing a Gospel song. "I was so proud of her then as I still am now," beams Polly. "In 1980 when she was still in high school," she continues, "I had to have surgery and Sheri volunteered to be my replacement. She did an excellent job!" Sheri continued her education at the University of Georgia where she received a BBA degree in marketing with singing elective courses. She also continued to travel and sing with The Lewis Family whenever she could.
Sheri and Jeff Easter married in 1985 and they joined The Lewis Family for three years. In 1988 when Sheri was expecting Madison, her firstborn, she and Jeff chose this time to go out on their own. Polly declares, "Friends and fans of The Lewis Family tell me all the time that Sheri has my smile, mannerisms, and some even say she sings like me - now, that's a flattering comment."
Helping to manage the Jeff & Sheri Easter schedule is tricky sometimes, and Sheri says, "I do a lot of what I learned from my mom." She makes sure that their schedule does not interfere with school and important functions for the children. She even arranges her paperwork so that there's plenty of time to spend with them, and they think she's the greatest mom ever! Says Polly, "Sheri is very organized," and even Jeff grins, "I've never been this organized in my life!"
Like mother like daughter...Last and least...Morgan Easter is one hundred percent little girl, petite, pretty, independent, and loving, and even organized, for one so young. At six years old, she has captured the heart of all the Gospel music industry with her expressive little-girl voice; a voice so special that she already has one project to her credit, and the title is, 'Are You Anything Like Me?' Yes, Morgan, they are like you...Your mother, your grandmother, and your great-grandmother.
